ENGLISH

A Level Language and Literature

If you have enjoyed English up to now you will almost certainly enjoy the subject to AS or A2. You will have the opportunity to develop expertise in a variety of language uses.

The subject is not only valuable in its own right but also as a supporting A-level for those not intending to study English at University. It is of direct relevance to Higher Education courses in linguistics and allied courses, which have burgeoned in recent years.

The study of AS & A2 English language will improve your own standards of literacy and will be of great practical use to you. Employers are keen to take on employees who can write accurately and in an appropriate tone.

Clarity of thought and expression, fearless and closely reasoned criticism, respect for logical argument and an understanding of the differences between facts and values will be indispensable attributes of those opting for the course.

You will be invited to study language with particular reference to the uses of spoken and written English. You will be asked to write what – within reason- you want to write. You will be asked to comment both orally and on paper on what you have written. You will be invited to consider the nature and functions of language in human thought and communication. Assessment is by means of both examination and coursework.
