English Society

The Harpur Trust English Society is a joint initiative with the four Harpur Trust Schools – Bedford Modern School, Bedford School, Dame Alice Harpur School and The High School - working together to organise literary events.

Interested members of the sixth form attend one meeting every half term to discuss a particular topic or listen to a guest speaker.

In the past we have had a variety of different events including:-

A talk from published writer and BMS old boy, Toby Litt.

A trip to the Imperial War Museum for the exhibition on the war poets.

Trips to the theatre to see A Streetcar Named Desire and Dr Faustus.

A guest reading of Chaucer’s The Merchant’s Prologue and Tale.

A talk from Dr Sullivan on Hogarth and the impact on context on 18th century writing.

Trivia Quiz and Christmas Party.

Two students from each school run the society and organise events, and anyone from the sixth form is welcome to attend.

For further information on this year’s events, please contact Anna Martin.
