Carnegie Reading Group

The Carnegie Reading Group is for pupils in Years 7-9. It meets weekly at lunchtimes in the summer term and provides a forum for pupils and teachers to read and discuss the books shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

The Carnegie Medal is awarded each year, in June, to an outstanding work of fiction for young readers (aged 11-14). A shortlist of six books is announced in April; the challenge is to read all six books and be in a position to vote for your favourite in June. BMS has a page on the shadowing website where students can post reviews and read the opinions of others. For more information visit www.ckg.org.uk.

This year we conducted a 'Battle of the Books' with six English teachers each promoting and defending one of the shortlisted books. Discussions about the credibility of characters, the effectiveness of plot and the quality of writing are always matched by debate around each book's suitability for different ages and genders.

Some of the shortlisted titles are now on the recommended reading lists in our Independent Reading Scheme.
